Hydrogen on the horizon - Ready, Almost Set, Go?

As the sector ponders the future for hydrogen here, the World Energy Council has released a new report "Hydrogen on the Horizon - Ready, Almost set, Go?". The report highlights global efforts to develop hydrogen, based on national development strategies and interviews with 38 experts from 23 countries. As Executive Director Tina Schirr notes, although many countries are working on it, "the way isn't clear yet."  Read more...

Climate change intensifying - IPCC report

The latest Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change report released this week gives a clearer picture of the past, present and future climate based on the latest science. Global temperatures are expected to reach or exceed 1.5 degrees. However, strong and sustained reductions in emissions could limit climate impacts. The information includes a handy 40-page Summary for Policymakers and Interactive Atlas to explore regional results.  Read more...

Creating sustainable leadership in energy

To make genuine, persistent progress on energy transformation, leadership is needed. Last month, over 40 people gathered in Wellington to participate in the Catapult Sustainability Leadership Programme. Participants talked about systems change, collaboration and sustainability strategies, before getting real-life examples from Z Energy, Transpower, ANZCO and Stuff. Read more...

Ara Ake welcomes new team members

Ara Ake, the organisation working to accelerate the commercialisation of energy innovation in NZ, has welcomed onboard five new team members, including former Energy & Resources spokesperson Jonathon Young as Head of Policy. Strategic initiatives for the team this year include mapping the energy ecosystem, delivering 'pathways to commericalisation' services, and creating and sharing new energy knowledge.  Read more...

Mood of the boardroom

The Mood of the Boardroom survey, conducted annually by the BusinessNZ Network and NZ Herald, is seeking the views of business owners and operators on current issues such as staff availability, Covid restrictions, energy costs and many other regulatory and employment issues. EECA analysis considers commercial-scale solar 

A new study by EECA shows a range of internal rates of return for businesses considering investing in commercial-scale solar, from 0.4% to 8.6%. The study analysed 11 different businesses from eight regions across New Zealand. It is the latest in a string of reports produced by the Insights team exploring issues from off-road liquid fuel use to innovation and its role in our low-carbon transition.  Read more...

New Wonder Project Power challenge

From the beginning of Term 3, 30 classrooms across the country will take part in Engineering New Zealand's latest Wonder Project initiative - the Power Challenge. Sponsored by Transpower, the eight-week activity will teach Year 7 and 8 students about energy sources and power generation. It is a great way to "build curiosity, confidence and a commitment to STEM," notes Transpower Chief Executive Alison Andrew. Read more...

Flux energy tech 3.0 to tackle climate change

Distributed energy resources such as solar, wind and batteries have the potential to help tackle climate change. "Retailers have a key role to play in the uptake of new technologies, but they can only sell what they can bill," notes Jessica Venning-Bryan, Chief Client Officer at Flux Federation. Flux has launched a new billing product FlexiBill, allowing retailers to prepare for distributed energy resources, unlock new markets and simplify bills. Read more...

Distribution networks discussion doc released

Improving competition and innovation on distribution networks supports New Zealand's transition to a low emissions economy. The Electricity Authority is looking at a range of potential issues relating to distribution networks including the potential regulatory options that may be needed to support the transition and ensure a long-term benefit to consumers. Read more...

The Dark Side of Aurora: Space Weather risks to NZ Energy Infrastructure?

15 September, Dunedin

UN Space Experts have recognised that the largest space weather risk to our technological society is to the energy infrastructure, and particularly to Earth's electrical transmission networks. Extreme geomagnetic disturbances induce potentially damaging electrical currents in long electrical conductors, examples are power transmission lines or gas pipeline networks. This talk will introduce the hazard and the new MBIE-funded Endeavour programme to mitigate risks.
