Charging ahead: BEC sheds light on energy matters
|
The BusinessNZ Energy Council (BEC) has outlined core competencies and areas of concern for the energy sector as part of its 2023 election briefing document. Critical areas of concern include simplifying the Resource Management Act to ensure it is fit-for-purpose, looking at how to boost investment in energy and attract talent to New Zealand, and how to restore confidence in our carbon market and the Emissions Trading Scheme. New Zealand becomes associated to Horizon Europe |
The EU and New Zealand have signed the agreement on the participation of New Zealand to Horizon Europe, the EU’s research, and innovation programme. Horizon Europe is the biggest EU research and innovation programme ever with a budget of 170 billion NZD. Association to Horizon Europe means that researchers and organisations in New Zealand can now participate in Pillar II of the programme, including challenges such as climate and energy. Read more…

The journey to pollution-free parcel delivery |
The reality of freight being moved around New Zealand in heavy trucks powered by green hydrogen is edging closer. NZ Post has been trialling a hydrogen powered truck for a year and the results are promising. Since the trial was launched in July last year, NZ Post says the The zero emission, Hyundai XCIENT FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) has been deployed on full commercial operations between Auckland and Hamilton to assess its performance on New Zealand roads and conditions. Empower Energy distribution platform |
Empower Energy has launched its distribution platform that enables the donation of power bill credits to be distributed to families experiencing energy hardship.
The charitable donations already received have gone directly to vulnerable families struggling with the cost of living, by paying a proportion of their power bill.
Empower Energy have also partnered with FinCap to identify the recipients for these power bill credits.

Z Energy teams up with ChargeNet and Counties Energy for single EV Charging app |
Z Energy (Z) is partnering with ChargeNet and Counties Energy Limited (which operates OpenLoop) to launch an EV charging roaming trial, with support from EECA. The project aims to develop and trial EV-roaming capability between the three EV charging networks, which would enable EV drivers to charge at any of three networks from their choice of account.

Fonterra increases emissions reduction ambitions |
Fonterra has announced a lift in its decarbonisation ambition with a new Scope 1&2 emissions reduction target which will be achieved by bringing forward some of its work to get out of coal.
Fonterra CEO Miles Hurrell says the Co-op is targeting a 50% absolute reduction in Scope 1&2 emissions by 2030, from a 2018 baseline, an increase on its previous target of a 30% reduction by 2030. Read more...

Certified Energy regularly publishes a Residual Supply Mix (RSM). The RSM is an emissions factor for use by energy users in Aotearoa New Zealand when estimating emissions and planning decarbonisation activity. The RSM represents the characteristics of grid-supplied electricity, including all grid-connected electricity generation, adjusted to remove generation for which the renewable attributes have been explicitly traded and tracked on the NZECS for redemption against a particular business' consumption. bp in marine biofuel first for Wellington Harbour |
bp Marine, part of bp’s trading and shipping business, has entered into a long-term supply agreement with integrated transport company StraitNZ, which includes the supply of marine biofuels in the port of Wellington.
bp Marine’s new Wellington offer will comprise the supply of marine fuels by barge, including the region’s first bio-VLSFO, to its customers from early 2024. Read more...

Latest transport funding invests in clean marine and off-road vehicles |
A range of new projects are showing what's possible when it comes to low emission off-road vehicles and water-borne vessels, as part of a new round of Government funding announced today.
Energy and Resources Minister Hon Dr Megan Woods has confirmed 19 innovative transport projects, including the country’s first electric 90-tonne dump truck, a road construction crew using zero-emissions equipment, and an electric hydrofoil ferry.
