Much anticipated climate advice now released | The Climate Change Commission have released draft advice on potential pathways to reach net zero emissions by 2050. The advice expands on the governments current target for renewable electricity, suggesting a 60% target for renewable energy by 2035. Heat, industry and power are proposed to reduce emissions by 44% over that period, requiring the adoption of new technology and collaboration across the sector. Read more... | | | |
Policies for an evolving transport fleet | Transport emissions could also reduce dramatically, set to halve by 2035 according to the Commission's advice. One option is to increase the uptake of electric vehicles in NZ. A recent study undertaken by Concept Consulting and Retyna explores various policy mechanisms such as a feebate scheme or fleet emission standard. According to the study, NZ could save up to $15 billion by 2050 in vehicle, fuel and carbon emission costs. Read more...

The World Energy Council's Pathways to Climate Neutrality report compares pathways for the EU and 16 other countries, including NZ. The report identifies four approaches; the 'green pioneer' with a focus on de-carbonisation, the 'traditionalist' who prioritises economic efficiency and energy security, the 'energy exporter' and the 'energy hungry'. Artificial intelligence to shake up energy sector | Wellington-based software developer Arcanum delivers enterprise artificial intelligence technology, taking large data sets and generating new insights into the data. Founder Asa Cox recognises there is already some innovation happening in the data-rich energy sector but says "a lot more could be done". Product stewardship scheme for big batteries | The Battery Industry Group (B.I.G) was launched in November 2019 to create a proposal for a 'circular' product stewardship scheme for large batteries. Its aim is to ensure large batteries are properly managed at end of life, and where possible, given a second life as part of a circular economy. Calculating costs of next electricity generation | MBIE have just released an interactive tool illustrating the levelised cost of electricity generation (LCOE) for potential projects. The LCOE is the average minimum price electricity can be sold for from an asset in order to cover the total cost of production over its lifetime. Mercury show support for EV announcement | Last month the government announced it will continue work towards introducing a clean car import standard. Manager of Government and Regulatory Affairs Nick Wilson supported the announcement saying it's time to put our foot on the pedal. Z Energy, Air New Zealand back biofuels mandate | Z Energy and Air New Zealand have welcomed the government's decision to implement a biofuels mandate that will help the country to reduce carbon emissions in the transport sector. Both companies have been part of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Consortium.
