IEA renewables market report |
The IEA has recently released its Renewables Market Report. The report shows the amount of renewable energy capacity added to the energy system has grown by 50% globally in 2023, reaching 510GW - with 3/4 of this addition driven by new solar PV. The increases in renewable energy capacity in Europe, the United States and Brazil also hit all-time highs. Read more...

TESLA Forecasting acquired by Yes Energy |
TESLA Forecasting has been acquired by Yes Energy, a leading North American power market data firm. TESLA Asia Pacific will operate business as usual with the existing Auckland based team. The acquisition brings more resources and the promising prospect of future developments in forecast and power market data capability. Consistent with prior Yes Energy acquisitions, the intent is for TESLA to be fully integrated with Yes Energy by mid to late 2024. Read more...

Solar farm to be built at Lauriston, Canterbury |
Genesis and joint venture partner, FRV Australia, have completed the financial close on their 63MW solar farm to be built at Lauriston on the Canterbury Plains. Fonterra to install its first electrode boiler |
In its next step to get out of coal, Fonterra has announced it will install a 20-megawatt electrode boiler at its Edendale site in Southland. This is another step for the Co-operative as it works to get out of coal by 2037 and reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% by 2030 (from 2018 baseline). Read more...

Joint venture for New Zealand's largest solar farm |
Global renewable energy infrastructure developer, Harmony Energy Limited has entered a joint venture with First Renewables Limited, part of New Zealand energy group Clarus (formerly Firstgas Group), to develop and own Tauhei Solar Farm. At the time of commissioning in 2026, it is expected to be New Zealand's largest solar farm at 150 MWac, constructed on 182 hectares near Te Aroha in the North Island. Read more... |

Huntly Unit 5 returns to service
|
New Zealand's electricity generation has been boosted by the early return to service of the powerful Unit 5 combined cycle gas turbine at Genesis Energy's Huntly Power Station. Unit 5 came back online 20 January, four months earlier than originally expected. The 400MW unit can power up to 400,000 households. Read more...

Briefings to incoming Ministers |
MBIE have released their Briefings to Incoming Ministers (BIMs). For the Minister for Energy and the Minister of Resources the briefing provides advice on the energy strategy and wind offshore regulation. It refers to challenges in maintaining security of supply, adequate gas supply, and tight electricity supply challenges. It explores the use of hydrogen and green methanol, aligning incentives and removing barriers for firms to lower emissions, along with affordability challenges. Read more... |
