2nd World Energy Council Energy Pulse Survey

The World Energy Council (WEC) have launched the 2nd World Energy Pulse Survey to look at the interaction of today's continuous energy shocks and their impacts in energy across societies. This is your opportunity to contribute your views on the impact and outlook of the ongoing global energy shock.  Read more...

Southland hydrogen moves ahead with final partner selection

Two Australian companies, Woodside Energy and Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) have entered final stage negotiations to become lead developer of the world’s largest green hydrogen production facility in Southland. A joint venture between Meridian Energy and Contact Energy.

Contact to close Te Rapa gas plant

New Zealand will lose another 44 megawatts of gas-fired generation capacity next winter. Contact Energy announced it will close its Te Rapa co-generation power station when its supply agreement with Fonterra expires next June. That’s in addition to the decommissioning of the Taranaki Combined Cycle gas plant in late 2023, which will remove another 377 MW of gas from the generation mix.

International market consultation on the 1st H2Global tender

The tenders for Germany’s green hydrogen import promotion initiative H2Global will start shortly. There will be an international market consultation for companies, government representatives and NGOs to clarify final details about the tendering procedure, contractual details and the product criteria to be met.
The virtual conference will take place on 13 July 2022 at 11am. – approx. 1pm. (CET).

bp Statistical Review of World Energy 2022

bp has released the 71st annual edition of the bp Statistical Review of World Energy, the most comprehensive collection and analysis of global energy data.

Key findings from the 2022 edition include: 

 - In 2021, energy consumption increased by almost 6%, more than reversing the sharp fall in 2020 as much of the world locked down.
- Renewable energy, led by wind and solar power, continued to grow strongly in 2021 and now accounts for 13% of total power generation. 

- Overall global emissions rose 5.7% in 2021, registering close to 2019 levels. 

- Renewable generation (excluding hydro) increased by almost 17% in 2021 and accounted for over half of the increase in global power generation over the past two years. 

- Global gas demand grew 5.3%, increasing above pre-pandemic 2019 levels. 

 - Oil consumption increased by 5.3 million barrels per day.

New Zealand Hydropower Conference 2022

21 September 2022, Te Pae, Christchurch

It has been some time since hydropower professionals have had the opportunity to network and share experiences here in New Zealand. The New Zealand Hydropower Group would like to invite members and other enthusiastic hydropower professionals to join us in Christchurch in September 2022 for our inaugural conference. 

Some of the topics to be covered will be the Energy Transition in New Zealand and how hydropower will be a key part of this, technology advancements, pumped and energy storage, the importance of safeguards for sustainable hydro development as well as recent small hydro developments. .
