Council sharing insights from the Commissions just released report Leveraging
our energy resources. New Zealand needs cost-competitive
backup generation to cover periods when demand is high, hydro reservoirs are
low, the wind is light, and the sun is not shining. The report is part of the

Electricity and Gas Market Update |
Electricity prices, both spot and futures, remained high through May as below average inflows continued and demand increased, and as we moved towards the cooler winter months. Hydro storage continued to decline while gas production also reduced further, putting more upward pressure on both gas and electricity prices. Read more...

overseas investments in strategically important businesses. This includes
businesses involved in generating and distributing electricity. Overseas
investments under $100m can be assessed for risks to New Zealand’s national
security and public order.

Genesis CEO departs for Australia |
Genesis CEO Marc England has announced his resignation after six years with the company. He is heading across the Tasman to head up New South Wales electricity distributor Ausgrid. England will depart Genesis in late 2022. “It has been a privilege to lead Genesis, one of New Zealand’s strongest brands and owner of critical national infrastructure, and to have worked with an amazing team of people,” said England. Straterra welcomes new CEO
|
Straterra, the industry association representing the New Zealand minerals and mining sector, has appointed Josie Vidal as its new CEO. She replaces Chris Baker who leaves the position after 12 years of service. Straterra Chair Alison Paul announced the appointment. “The Straterra Board is thrilled Josie has accepted the position of CEO,” Ms Paul said. Read more...

Decarbonisation funding for Business now available |
Round 4 of EECA’s contestable co-funding is now open. The fund is to help business help reduce carbon emissions by supporting fuel switching and energy efficiency projects. Switching to renewable energy, coupled with energy efficiency, also helps future-proof businesses. Total projects with costs over $300,000 can now apply. Projects must be fully commissioned and operational by 31 December 2025. Read more…

Emrod's demonstration project |
Previously, Powerco partnered with Emrod to fund a lab-based trial. Powerco was keen to see whether the technology can deliver efficiencies to the way power is delivered to some customers, such as those in remote or challenging areas. The wait is almost over for the world-first demonstration of wireless electricity transmission. With the ongoing support from Ara Ake, Emrod have started the process of bringing their demonstration unit to Taranaki, and testing it at the end of June. Read more...
