NZ's energy system is top 10, security key focus

We just launched this year's energy trilemma results. We are delighted to announce New Zealand's energy system remains one of the top ten globally for equitable, secure, and sustainable access. BEC Executive Director Tina Schirr says "Transitioning to a fully sustainable energy system which is secure, affordable and equitable is undoubtedly a tough balancing act. But it is not a question of whether we should, but rather how to do it affordably, and what trade-offs we are willing to accept. Read more…

BEC’s Energy Policy Advisor has returned from the World Energy Council’s Executive Assembly and Trilemma Summit in Aberdeen, Scotland with insights into the unfolding energy crisis cursing the continent. BEC Submission on proposed ETS changes

Over the last two months BEC has been submitting on MFE’s suggestions to change some elements of the NZ carbon market (the ETS) and the EA’s recommendations on how to treat large electricity purchase agreements going forward.  Please find submissions here.

The Good Registry - holiday giving

A lot of energy goes into corporate gifts every Christmas - from production to trucking and shipping, and ultimately disposal.  Often that’s wasted energy, with unwanted or unnecessary gifts never being used. The Good Registry is out to change that. Round 5 of the GIDI fund just opened

The RFP for medium to large energy projects is now open from 10 November 2022 until 2 March 2023. Projects with focus on process heat, including high impact decarbonisation, projects of national significance, projects at regional level that optimise low emission fuel use can apply. Funding is also available for electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure upgrades to support fuel-switching and for businesses wanting to buy and install low emission, high efficiency electrical equipment. E-fuels in New Zealand

Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) and Channel Infrastructure’s study into the potential feasibility of green hydrogen production at Channel’s Marsden Point site is progressing, with the next phase, focussed on manufacturing supply for the domestic market, expected to be finalised in the first half of 2023. The focus of the study will now shift to the viability of options to produce green hydrogen and green hydrogen products for domestic use in New Zealand, with a range of potential uses under consideration including transport fuel and the production of e-SAF. Contact Energy has launched a new plan, Dream Charge, designed specifically for EV owners. It's another iteration of Contact’s “time-of-use” power plans, where Contact customers can utilise Goodnights plan with three hours of free power.

The FlexForum is currently scoping a review of the Learning-by-doing ecosystem. Unlocking the value of flexibility requires a research, development and commercialisation ecosystem which supports learning-by-doing. The FlexForum wants to find out practical ways to improve the support now available. The Forum is expecting to talk with people about their experience with and suggestions for improving learning-by-doing in early 2023. Read more…

Digital Offshore Wind Workshops

You are warmly invite you to a two-event webinar series on offshore wind within the New Zealand-Germany Energy Dialogue.   

Offshore wind has a long history of deployment in Germany and has played a part in paving the way for worldwide use of this renewable resource. Throughout the 20 years since the first German offshore wind park received its permit, many achievements in terms of cost reductions, innovation and policy settings have been made that can be shared to help other countries in reducing emissions.

Our digital offshore wind workshops will dive into aspects of targets, policy setting, regulations, lessons learned, innovation, supply chains and the business case for offshore wind from a governmental and industry perspective. Speakers from both Germany and New Zealand will share their insights and discuss how both countries can address the challenges that lie ahead on the way to net zero and cooperate to achieve them.
