Storage of carbon dioxide emissions
|
Dunedin-based company Weora is behind a project to drill holes on land near Bluff with the view to storing carbon dioxide emissions in underground rock formation, in a manner never before done in New Zealand. If the project proceeds, atmospheric carbon dioxide wiould initially be captured from large-emitting companies and either trucked or piped to the underground rocks in Southland for permanent storage, known as sequestration. Methane Tamer product to South Korea
|
CH4 Global has partnered with Lotte International to take its Methane Tamer product to South Korea by 2025. The company says that its trademarked Methane Tamer product, when added to cattle feed, reduces the animals' methane emissions by up to 90% while reducing the feed energy lost to methane emissions. Projects | Lodestone Energy Solar Farms |
Lodestone is developing a portfolio of 198MW across five solar PV projects and have now started construction on two of its five solar farms located in the North Island. When completed, the five solar farms will produce more than 365GWh of renewable energy to homes and businesses, enough to power 50,000 homes, or a population equivalent to the size of Hamilton. Harapaki wind farm update |
Construction of Meridian Energy’s Harapaki wind farm in Hawke’s Bay is now well underway. Completion of repairs to SH5 by Waka Kotahi enabled turbine parts to begin transportation to site in late July and this will continue until the end of January. Z Energy and Red Phase set up ultra-fast EV charging |
The country’s largest fuel retailer – Z Energy (Z) – has partnered with the rapidly growing Kiwi company Red Phase Technologies (Red Phase) to bring new ultra-fast EV chargers to the forecourt. With the support of EECA and Powerco, two ultra-fast Red Phase EV chargers are being piloted at Z Waiouru. A research paper “The Ability of Offshore Wind to Improve New Zealand’s Electricity Security of Supply”, a report by Elemental Group summer intern, Hannah Konings, a University of Otago Honours student in Energy Science and Technology, concluded that offshore wind can diversify and support electrical generation in New Zealand. It also looked at how three 1 GW offshore wind developments in Southland, Taranaki and Waikato could be incorporated into the grid creating greater renewable energy diversity and decreasing our reliance on non-renewable energies. Celebrating 100 years of energy in New Zealand |

The BusinessNZ Energy Council (BEC), representing the World Energy Council (WEC) here in New Zealand, are marking the centenary of the world energy community that was formed in 1923 ahead of the First World Power Conference which took place in London the following year. Visionaries like Einstein and Planck have exemplified the spirit of the World Energy Council, where together, we address the most pressing energy challenges. Since its first days, we have built a deeply local and globally networked community that today works collaboratively in nearly 100 countries, progressing solutions, inspiring leadership action and promoting the sustainable supply and use of energy across the world. Now it is time to celebrate impact in energy and shaping the next 100 years of progress!
This celebration seeks to galvanise the world energy community around transforming energy systems at speed and at scale, activating for a cleaner, better future for billions of better lives and one healthy planet. In Auckland, we will celebrate the achievements and challenges of the past, present, and future of energy in New Zealand.
You will be joining speakers who have made significant contributions to the development and innovation of energy in our country. The event will be broken down into five speakers discussing four separate periods: the 1920s-1950s, 1960s to 1984, 1984 to 2000s, and 2000s onwards. Speakers include:

The German-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce would like to warmly invite you to a webinar on Geothermal Energy on Thursday, 12th of October, within the New Zealand-Germany Energy Dialogue co-hosted with both the New Zealand and German Geothermal Associations.
Geothermal energy is a topic of mutual interest in Germany and New Zealand and offers opportunities for learning from each other. New Zealand is known for its large geothermal resources and has been utilizing it for power production and direct-use applications for the past several decades. Germany, on the other hand, has been employing it primarily for heating purposes and is planning to expand its use. So far, the Energy Dialogue between Germany and New Zealand has been focusing on hydrogen and offshore wind and we are looking forward to expanding the scope with this session. Please join the World Energy Council for the upcoming Community Strengthening Workshop: What to expect from the 26th World Energy Congress. This session, open to the entire Council community, will focus on enhancing the Congress experience and equipping the community with the information needed to fully engage stakeholders in this important event. With four years having passed since our last Congress in 2019, and an increasing number of members who have never attended before, this workshop will help you understand what the Congress is like and raise your expectations for this exceptional event.
We will delve into what you can expect at the Congress and how it adds value to your organisation and your members. We will hear from past Congress participants who will share their experiences and valuable insights for first-time attendees. Furthermore, we will clarify the role and expectations of all Member Committees in activating ministerial support, mobilising strong Congress delegations from your national networks, and engaging your commercial and other stakeholder networks in support of Congress commercial objectives. For over a century, the World Energy Congress has been our flagship event, and it's imperative that the entire World Energy Community plays its part in the next six months to contribute to preparations and ensure the best Congress ever. |

We are delighted to invite abstracts for the 17th Annual OERC Symposium 2023. The main focus of this year's symposium is to be a forum of discussion for all voices' energy research agendas. The symposium brings together diverse perspectives and strategies towards meeting the 2050 energy transition goals. We are welcoming contributions from across the energy research community. However, any research associated with the energy transition is welcome. Abstracts should be emailed to oercadmin@otago.ac.nz including: ⦁ title ⦁ author name(s) ⦁ affiliation ⦁ abstract (250 words max) ⦁ Indicating if you will give an oral or poster presentation. Once a decision has been made, You will be invited to give either a presentation or a poster. The deadline for abstract submission is Friday 20th October 2023.
