The Energy Progress Report 2023 |
The Energy Progress Report 2023 released this week by the IEA, UN, World Bank and WHO shows large improvements across the energy trilemma since 2010. The most impressive improvements include: Between 2010 and 2021, the number of people without electricity has halved, from 1.1 billion to 675 million; Between 2010 and 2021, the number of people without clean cooking fuels and technology has dropped by 20%, from 2.9 billion to 2.3 billion. SmartPower’s energy market report shows most drivers for future electricity prices remain positive with gas supply (and price) better than it has been and international energy prices retreating. The domestic gas supply situation is improving with drilling providing an uptick in production at Maui and Mangahewa, with hopefully more to come. Domestic gas prices remain 10% below what they were a year ago. Internationally gas prices dropped around 5% in August. They remain high compared to historical levels. After recent falls coal prices increased 15% in August, they remain above the levels we would normally expect to see. Read more...

The newest addition to the Government Investment in Decarbonising Industry (GIDI) Fund has now opened, offering co-funding for air-to-water heat pump hot water systems in commercial buildings. Z Energy launches EV home charging offer |
Z Energy (Z) has recently launched its first foray into home charging with its ‘EV at home’ electricity offer. The package is designed to offer EV and Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicle drivers three hours of free power between 3am-6am and half price night rates (compared to day rates), between 9pm and 7am.
The offer highlights Z‘s expanding focus on providing customers with low carbon alternatives for their transport energy needs, with plans to have EV charging available at 20 percent of Z’s retail service station sites by the end of 2023. Read more... |

New Zealand Hydrogen Aviation Consortium to launch green hydrogen aviation |
Two BEC members - Fortescue and Hiringa Energy are part of a consortium including Airbus, Air New Zealand, Christchurch Airport, and Fabrum - the group of businesses has put forward a plan that would see liquid hydrogen-fuelled aircraft flying New Zealand's domestic routes.
The New Zealand Hydrogen Aviation Consortium said the shift to hydrogen power would remove up to 900,000 tonnes of carbon emissions every year by 2050. Read more...

MBIE Energy in New Zealand 2023 report |
MBIE has released its report which presents comprehensive information on and analysis of New Zealand’s energy supply and demand for the 2022 calendar year. Renewable sources generated 87% of electricity in 2022, with more recent data showing this regularly reaching above 90% and indications this will rise even more – if the weather is favourable.
The latest annual energy report from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) also said renewable sources made up 44% of all energy supply. Read more... |

Celebrating 100 years of energy in New Zealand |

The BusinessNZ Energy Council (BEC), a member of the World Energy Council (WEC), are marking the centenary of the world energy community that was formed in 1923 ahead of the First World Power Conference which took place in London the following year. Since this first gathering of 41 countries, WEC have built a deeply local and globally networked community that today works collaboratively in nearly 100 countries, progressing solutions, inspiring leadership action and promoting the sustainable supply and use of energy across the world. The World Energy Council has launched its centenary celebrations to commemorate 100 years of delivering impact in energy and shaping the next 100 years of progress. The celebrations seek to galvanise the world energy community around transforming energy systems at speed and at scale, activating for a cleaner, better future for billions of better lives and one healthy planet. This is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and challenges of the past, present, and future of energy in New Zealand.
Join us to explore the history of energy in New Zealand from the 1920s-1950s, 1960s to 1984, 1984 to 2000s, and the 2000s - and looking into what the future might hold for the New Zealand energy sector. Speakers include:

The German-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce would like to warmly invite you to a webinar on Geothermal Energy on Thursday, 12th of October, within the New Zealand-Germany Energy Dialogue co-hosted with both the New Zealand and German Geothermal Associations.
Geothermal energy is a topic of mutual interest in Germany and New Zealand and offers opportunities for learning from each other. New Zealand is known for its large geothermal resources and has been utilizing it for power production and direct-use applications for the past several decades. Germany, on the other hand, has been employing it primarily for heating purposes and is planning to expand its use. So far, the Energy Dialogue between Germany and New Zealand has been focusing on hydrogen and offshore wind and we are looking forward to expanding the scope with this session.
