Leading the Change

Whilst the suspense is still building up over the new NZ government formation, YEPN is ready to launch its three-year strategy and indicative programme. Our Network is apolitical, but we are proud to share and foster common values, some of which were presented at the Downstream Conference last year. We are also fortunate to draw inspiration from global views and ideas, as our Future Energy Leaders (FELs), Tina Frew, Daniel Gnoth and Bennet Tucker will soon be heading to the World Energy Leaders' Summit in Lisbon. Don't hesitate to join us on 14 December to hear about their insights from this event.

This Newsletter will give you a taste of the new strategic direction we are taking at YEPN, and of the changes leaders in government and in the energy sector, in New Zealand and in the world, may bring.

We are keen to hear your comments, ideas and perspective, so if you've got something to share, get in touch with us at yepn@bec.org.nz.
Our Strategy to 2020
The YEPN Strategy to 2020 sets the direction and activities for the Network to deliver value to its members and BEC (BusinessNZ Energy Council). The strategy can be viewed on our refreshed website, along with our Terms of Reference, membership information and other news. We will get back to you in November to validate our orientation and themes, so stay tuned!
BEC's Energy Panel 2017
The spokespersons of six political parties (Greens, TOP, National, NZ First, ACT and Labour) presented their respective energy policies at the Energy Panel 2017. The whole discussion can now be viewed online on BEC's website.
What happened this winter?
Emily Calvert (Market Analyst at Transpower) and Rosie Read (Energy Modelling Analyst at Meridian Energy) explained what the low inflows in the South Island this winter meant in terms of security of supply for the electricity industry, and how their teams responded to these challenges. You can now view the presentations from Transpower and Meridian Energy. Weekly security of supply reports are accessible on Transpower's website.
Young innovators in the spotlight at Lightning Lab Electric
The Lightning Lab start-up accelerator programme have pitched four innovative ideas to the electricity sector. Teams from Ampli, MLabs, Polany.io and emhTrade are rolling up their sleeves, working on smarter communications, information sharing and analysis tools for the electricity sector.
Decarbonisation: key energy challenge of New Zealand
This month's World Energy Focus invited Mike Bennetts (CEO, Z Energy) and John Carnegie (Executive Director, BEC) to discuss New Zealand's shift in the Energy Trilemma balance. While New Zealand traditionally focused on security of supply, its main challenge now is to set ambitious targets to reduce energy sector-wide carbon emissions. BEC2050 Energy Scenarios explain how two narratives, Kayak and Waka, applied to transport could help define policies to achieve such targets.
Towards a 100% renewable world?
A study led by Mark Z. Jacobson, from Stanford University, shows how available technologies in solar, wind and water energy sources could help the world stay below 1.5 °C in global temperature rise by 2050, should 139 countries, including New Zealand, implement their suggested energy transition roadmaps.
