Energy in New Zealand 2022 report released

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) have released their annual Energy in New Zealand 2022 report. “The report shows the share of energy supply from renewables was 40.8 per cent, the highest since reporting started in 1990. Twenty-eight percent of energy consumption also came from renewables, the highest it has been since 2016,” says Mike Hayward, Manager Markets, Digital, Data & Insights, at MBIE.  Read more here…

EU Green Deal newsletter

The EU Green Deal newsletter covers the last three months of Green Deal-related developments in the European policy field, with a strong focus on REPower EU, the EU's drive to wean itself off Russian fossil fuels while accelerating the delivery of its climate goals. As well as REPower EU, themes include sustainable farming, nature, trade, foresight and ocean. Read more...

Regulator and futures market - next steps for ETS?

An independent regulator for emissions trading and a futures market could be the next steps in New Zealand's carbon market design, according to BusinessNZ Energy Council webinar panellists. As a result, they are once again inviting Members, Member Committees and the full World Energy Community network to propose stories of their work for inclusion. Genesis Energy calls for interest in Market Security Options from big users

Genesis Energy is offering rival generators, big power users, and electricity retailers a means to protect themselves from volatile prices and possible shortfalls in renewable generation. It has called for indications of interest in its new Market Security Options (MSO), which would allow them to lock in a guaranteed power supply from the themal fired Huntly station when extra generation is needed. Helios confirms 115 MW BoP solar grid connection

Helios Energy has provided an update of its national grid-scale solar development programme, confirming the first two priority developments in its project pipeline. Helios director, Jason McDonald, said that the company's first development would be an approximately 115-megawatt project, located to the north-east of Transpower's Edgecumbe substation, near Whakatāne.

What fuel should my truck use?

Aotearoa New Zealand’s future energy centre, Ara Ake, is working with major road freight and transport companies to help them better assess the options and costs for decarbonising their road fleet. Ara Ake is partnering with H.W. Richardson Group (HWR) and Freightways to assess the total cost of ownership of different low emissions fleet options. This will be carried out by Auckland University of Technology (AUT) using the publicly available Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) tool developed by Ara Ake.  Read more... 

Transpower new connection enquiries

Transpower is facing a significant increase in new grid connection enquiries, particularly from developers of grid scale solar and wind generation as well as new industrial load customers. As part of its commitment to an improved connections process, the organisation has just launched a new GIS dashboard that allows complete visibility of its forward pipeline of enquiries. The dashboard provides a detailed view of new connection enquiries and data is regularly updated and will shortly be live for September.
