The BusinessNZ Energy Council (BEC) has released its Energy Briefing today, highlighting the strong performance in the sector and outlining a number of recommendations to keep improving and allow business to leverage New Zealand’s domestic successes internationally.
The briefing shows that, despite performing relatively well, the country cannot rely on business-as-usual settings as there is much still to be done, says BusinessNZ Chief Executive Phil O’Reilly.
“Only a domestic energy market that strives on vigorous competition and innovation will foot it in global markets,” said Mr O’Reilly.
“To achieve all of our goals we need balanced outcomes across the energy trilemma of energy equity, environmental sustainability and energy security. Our recent experience highlights the ever present policy and investment risks of getting the dimensions out of balance,” said Dr Rob Whitney, Chair of the BusinessNZ Energy Council.
Dr Whitney said the work of the World Energy Council provides tools that can help the government frame how we respond to our domestic and international challenges and opportunities.
“The BEC2050 Energy Scenarios project underway is a great example of drawing on international lessons to help us assess the uncertain impacts of world events on future domestic energy policy.”
