Asia – Pacific Energy Leaders Summit
Delivering Resilient Energy Infrastructure
2016
About The Summit
On 16-17 March in Wellington, New Zealand, the World Energy Council and the BusinessNZ Energy Council hosted the inaugural Asia-Pacific Energy Leaders’ Summit, which was opened by the Hon John Key, Prime Minister of New Zealand.
Under the theme of resilience, the event brought together 200 business practitioners, energy experts and policy-makers from around the world, to better understand the growing resiliency risks and challenges presented by: climate change, emerging technologies, extreme weather events, cyber security, and the energy water-food nexus.
Insights, lessons and solutions were shared from around the world, with highlights including presentations from:
-
Christina Bu, Secretary General, Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association, Norway, who spoke about the future role of e-mobility.
“ELECTRIFYING THE PASSENGER CAR FLEET IS THE SINGLE MOST EFFECTIVE MEASURE TO REDUCE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS.” “NORWAY’S PLAN FOR 2017 IS TO HAVE 2 CHARGING STATIONS EVERY 50KM ON MAIN ROADS.”
-
Bryna Lipper, Vice President Relationships,100 Resilient Cities, USA, who spoke about smart and resilient cities: transforming design.
“CITIES HAVE A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY TO INCORPORATE RESILIENT DESIGN INTO INFRASTRUCTURE.” “TWO THIRDS OF THE WORLD IS LIVING IN CHRONIC WATER STRESS RIGHT NOW.” “FOR EVERY $1 SPENT TODAY, $4 IS SAVED IN DISASTER RECOVERY/REBUILD.”
-
Christoph Frei, World Energy Council, launched the early findings of a new report on the energy-water-food nexus.
It predicts a 40% shortfall of available water across the globe by 2030 with effects not just for drinking, food production, hygiene and public health, but also for 98% of global electric power generation. ‘The road to resilience – managing the risks of the energy-water-food nexus’ calls for immediate action in order to secure resilient energy infrastructure. During the ensuing panel discussion with Vincent Tidwell, Distinguished Member of Technical Staff, Sandia National Laboratories, US, Frei stated that:“WATER SECURITY WILL ALWAYS TRUMP ENERGY”.
