(Un)breaking the Electricity Market – Great Debate Series
Join us for the third edition of our Great Debate Series
‘(Un)breaking the Electricity Market’
Join us in Auckland for a panel discussion on how to future proof our electricity market
The event will kick off with Andrew Doube, General Manager Market Policy at the Electricity Authority who will brief on the EA’s Wholesale Market recommendations.
Following this there will be a panel facilitated by David Reeve, Director and Co-Founder at Whiteboard Energy
Panellists include Christine Southey, Director, Law + Policy Limited and
William Meek, Chief Financial Officer, Mercury
More panellists will be confirmed shortly.
Among other topics, we will debate:
- whether higher than usual wholesale prices indicate the market is not fit for purpose in some way or is there some other reasonable explanation for the sustained higher than usual prices
- learnings (if any) from overseas markets
- core fundamentals of economics, including if marginal prices send signals for investment
- possible interventions and New Zealand Government’s role in this
- main challenges if we are going to reform New Zealand’s wholesale market
- capacity markets and price caps
- which of the EA’s recommendations are supported by the panellist, and
- where should we start
The event will be followed by an opportunity to network with your peers from the energy sector.
